Avoid Heartburn How Can I Avoid Heartburn?

Many people find that simple lifestyle changes such as being sensible about what they eat and drink can help to reduce the frequency of heartburn. Here are a few steps you can take to avoid an attack:

  • Steer clear of food and drinks that are likely to cause heartburn. The most common triggers are:

    - rich or spicy food
    - citrus fruits
    - cabbage, tomatoes and cucumber
    - onions
    - beans and pulses
    - fizzy drinks
    - wine and neat spirits

  • Eat and drink in moderation.
  • Try to cut down on alcohol and caffeine (especially coffee and chocolate) as these are thought to cause the muscular valve between the oesophagus and the stomach to relax.
  • Eat your evening meal at least 2 hours before you go to bed.
  • Raise the head of the bed 6-8 inches and try to sleep on your left side.
  • If you’re overweight, try to lose a few pounds.
  • Try not to bend down or lie flat straight after a meal.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes, particularly if you’re going to eat a big meal.
  • Try to avoid stressful situations and find ways to relax when you start to feel tense.
  • Try to de-stress especially before you eat a meal.

Rennie® is a fast-acting, effective remedy that attacks the cause of heartburn, neutralising excess acid in the oesophagus and throat to soothe the burning pain within minutes.
